The project at hand, “Mapping Police Violence,” displays the amount and category of police violence in our country. Using statistical displays, such as numerical data, calendars, maps, and bar and line graphs, to display the deaths of different groups of people. The specific people working on the project are not specified; however, the staff is detailed in the “Who We Are” section on the “About” page on campaignzero.org. The Leadership of Campaign Zero includes Samuel Sinyangwe, Shauna Anthony, Kelly Davis, William Donahoe, Cassie Ippaso, and DeRay Mckesson. The project was started in 2015, as previously mentioned, and doesn’t see a definite ending, as the project tracks police violence 24/7, having consistent live data from previous years, months, days, and even the current day.
The project aims to inform the general public as well as the government of the severity of this issue, providing statistical data on around “92% of the total number of police killings that have occurred since 2013,” in hopes of spreading awareness and ending police violence in the United States.
This project is conducted by Campaign Zero, a specific project by the larger non-profit organization, WeTheProtesters. The research-based Campaign Zero was launched in 2015 in response to events such as the protests in Baltimore, studying and informing on public safety, specifically police violence.
Digital Humanities is a topic of using digital tools and projects to analyze, preserve, and respect culture. This project in specific exposes a serious issue that harms our culture, bringing awareness to its severity.
