LM Review of Mapping Police Violence

Data

Formally bringing attention to ALL danger imposed on citizens, “Mapping Police Violence” documents the deaths caused by police. The data is commonly received from news sites, exactly where the public is informed. The data displays the police mortality rates in our country, divided into states, years, calendar formats, maps, and line/bar graphs. These maps and graphs use color coding and captioned information to display the steady conflict of violence. Examples of this data are below.

The project starts by displaying the number of people who have been killed by police in the United States in our current year, which is currently 1,062 people as of October 27th, 2025. Following this live stat is a calendar showing the color-coded range of severe – less severe days of the year in terms of total deaths. The information on these tables and graphs is not directly cited, but the site has publications at the bottom, such as the Sage Journals and the SSRN. However, on the Airtable, displaying the identities of victims such as race, date and cause of death, location, the police department responsible, and more, links to photos of the victim as well as the news report source of the information are given. For example, a most recent case of Erasmo Huerta Gonzalez is linked to all information regarding his case; a tragic killing by a police vehicle, as the “Police officer who fatally struck a man inside Flushing Meadows Corona Park in broad daylight was not even looking at the road while driving on the usually car-free path.“

Victim Erasmo Huerta, aged 38 at time of death.

Raising publicity to these cases pays recognition and respect to the victims and their families as the hands of “America’s protectors.” As previously stated, a large margin of ignorance of these issues falls into the hands of minimal media coverage. Record of these victims keeps this issue fresh in the minds of Americans, and fresh in the fight for a better America.
