SEEK Ghost Detector
The digital ghost hunt uses multiple tools to achieve its goal of coding education for children. In order to create a fun and educational environment, the creators of this ARG used what they coined as a “SEEK Ghost Detector” This fictional device is made up two major components, a radio and a raspberry Pi computer chip. This technology allows the students to interact with the story being told by the creators, and multiple different devices were used for different parts of the project. For example, some devices would be able to interpret flashing lights, left by “the ghost”, and display a message in morse code. Others would detect ultraviolet light, and also display a message.

The usage of multiple different technologies for children to use requires students to use these tools collaboratively in order to solve the puzzles, teaching them basic skills of programming in the process. Have separate tools for each child also forces them to interact and engage with the narrative environmental individually. This contrasting dynamic highlights the different aspects of coding, teaching students that while it is important to be able to tackle and solve problems on your own in Computer Science, it is also necessary to work with others in order to complete larger and more intrinsically collaborative tasks.
The Raspberry Pi used to code these devices was written in C++ and MakeCode, and the actual code is available to download off of GitHub.
