Combatting historical erasure is a main value in Streetscape Palimpsest. The project brings attention to the overlooked histories of Georgia Avenue to ensure that past communities and the effects of urban renewal are not forgotten as the area evolves. With the documentation of how migration, economic shifts, and gentrification have shaped the area, the project challenges the tendency to erase difficult histories in favor of a sugar-coated version of the past.
While combatting historical erasure is not a value defined by Lisa Spiro, it is a value that is implicit in digital humanities. Through digital archives and interactive mapping, digital humanities helps uncover and document histories that could easily be lost.
One of the values in Migration Diaries is to represent marginalized voices, specifically migrants. The project seeks to provide a platform where people’s lived experiences, whether of hardship, hope, or triumph are shared. The varying perspectives emphasizes the aim to foster empathy and advocate for greater awareness and policies changes that would support migrant communities.
Digital humanities shares a similar value as defined by Lisa Spiro— connectedness. To be able to draw from the thoughts and experiences of others, research and projects have a more well-rounded and inclusive approach that can promote deeper and meaningful dialogue.
