Streetscape Palimpsest: A History of Georgia Avenue
Streetscape Palimpsest is an online narrative that aims to shed light on how urban transformation, migration, and economic development impact communities over time. In the case of Georgia Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia, the focus is on how gentrification and history intersect to question how to make new developments equitable and inclusive without erasing the rich history of the people who lived there. By layering personal stories, historical records, and digital mapping, Streetscape Palimpsest reveals the complex ways in which past and present urban landscapes and communities coexist.
Streetscape Palimpsest is a 2019 study and project conducted by Georgia State University Associate Professor, Marni Davis, with the help of Richard Laupus, Brennan Collins, Joe Hurley, and Josh Krivanek. This project is a map-based project that satellite imagery and street view pictures to show the change of Georgia Avenue over time.
