Police brutality evolved from slave patrols in the 1600’s and continues to present itself daily in the United States. Early forms of law enforcement were established on racial oppression and continued through the Civil War and Jim Crow era. After the Civil War patrols made the shift into official police forces, who still controlled and mistreat the black population to this day. Police brutality in our present day continues to be a major issue. In 2025 there were only two days where people were not killed by police. Through the use of digital mapping, researchers are able to track trends of police brutality, which allows them to predict and track corrupt organizations and officers.
