More Than 200,000 Rural Families Face an Eviction Every Year

This study, published in Rural Sociology on Eviction Lab, focuses on rural evictions and reveals that over 200,000 rural families face eviction each year. Disproportionally high rates occur in the Southern U.S. among Black renters due to persistent systemic barriers that have made stable housing harder to secure. Low wages and high rental costs only add to risk, especially in areas with increased development making living more expensive. To address the crisis, the study emphasizes the need for stronger tenant protections, more affordable housing programs, and greater support for Black homeownership.
