Values of StopICE

The Stop ICE Raids Alert Network embodies several core values of the Digital Humanities, particularly in its commitment to open knowledge, ethical information design, and community-centered data practices. As a project grounded in participatory reporting and public-facing visualization, Stop ICE demonstrates how DH principles can be applied to real-world social justice work.

Transparency & Openness

Stop ICE prioritizes transparency by making real-time data about ICE enforcement publicly accessible through its interactive map and open API. Instead of allowing immigration enforcement to remain hidden or fragmented, the project turns individual alerts into shared knowledge that anyone can examine, verify, or analyze. This openness aligns with DH’s commitment to open data, public access, and documentation, ensuring that information with broad social impact is not restricted to institutions but available to all.

Community Participation & Collaboration

At the heart of Stop ICE is a participatory reporting model in which community members contribute directly to the dataset. This transforms vulnerable individuals from passive subjects of surveillance into active agents who help document and challenge enforcement practices. Such a model aligns with DH values by elevating diverse voices, decentralizing authority, and recognizing the importance of community-generated knowledge. It demonstrates how digital tools can be designed with and for affected groups rather than imposed on them from outside.

Ethical Data Stewardship

Due to immigration enforcement being a sensitive and potentially dangerous topic, Stop ICE emphasizes ethical handling of data. Locations are generalized, personal identifiers are encrypted, and no GPS tracking is enabled by default. This careful approach ensures that transparency does not come at the cost of user safety. Ethical data stewardship is a cornerstone of DH, which advocates for responsible data collection, privacy protection, and thoughtful design that accounts for the lived realities of vulnerable communities. Stop ICE’s methods reflect those values by balancing openness with careful, human-centered protection.
