The Stop ICE Raids Alert Network
StopICE describes itself as a nationwide mobile alert system that lets people send and receive alerts about U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids and related immigration enforcement activity in their area.
About the Project
The system is explicitly designed so that no downloadable app is required. Instead, it uses technology already built into mobile phones (SMS) and a web interface.
Users can sign up (or text a key word) to join the alert system; for example: text “JOIN” to 877-322-2299 to subscribe.
Alerts are crowd-sourced: people in the community submit reports of ICE sightings or activity. These can be labelled “UNCONFIRMED”, “SIGHTING”, “CONFIRMED”, etc.
The site emphasizes that it “operates in the interest of free speech … not intended to encourage or promote illegal activity of any kind.”
