Goals of the StopICE Project

The Stop ICE Raids Alert Network was designed not simply as a digital tool, but as a living infrastructure for collective awareness, resistance, and empowerment.

Goal 1: Transparency

A central goal of Stop ICE is to create transparency around U.S. immigration enforcement by transforming hidden or localized events into publicly accessible data. Through its nationwide crowd-sourced alert system, the project collects and maps reports of ICE raids, detentions, and sightings, turning scattered individual experiences into a visible digital record. This visibility empowers journalists, advocates, and researchers to identify patterns of enforcement and hold institutions accountable. In the context of Digital Humanities, this goal reflects a commitment to open data and documentation — using technology to democratize access to information that shapes real lives and communities.

Goal 2: Community Empowerment and Safety

Another core objective of Stop ICE is to protect and empower immigrant communities through real-time communication and education. Its SMS alert system, “Know Your Rights” resources, and partnerships with local Rapid Response Teams allow users to prepare for and respond to ICE activity with collective strength. By enabling people to share information and support one another, Stop ICE builds digital solidarity networks that reduce fear and increase safety. This goal embodies participatory digital practice, showing how technology designed by and for the community can create meaningful tools for resilience, trust, and mutual aid.

Goal 3: Education & Advocacy

Beyond immediate alerts, Stop ICE seeks to raise awareness about immigration enforcement and human rights through accessible, data-driven storytelling. The project educates both immigrant and non-immigrant audiences about the realities of deportation and the importance of civic action. Its public-facing tools—maps, data visualizations, and rights-based materials—encourage informed advocacy and public dialogue around justice and accountability. Within the framework of Digital Humanities, this educational mission demonstrates how digital platforms can foster critical consciousness and ethical engagement, transforming raw data into knowledge that promotes empathy and systemic change.
