Selfiecity Intro

Selfiecity is a project that analyzes selfies from people all over the world. Towards the end of 2013, Dr. Lev Manovich (living in New York at the time) and his team of national researchers wanted to discover analyze how people all over the world from different places and cultures take selfies from the popular platform Instagram. This project focused on the cities Bangkok, Thailand, Berlin, Germany, Moscow, Russia, New York, New York, and Sao Paulo, Brazil. Taking selfies is something that may not be as simple as we think, the emotion, culture, and meaning can mean so much more. And that is exactly what Dr. Lev Manovich and his team wanted to show and discover. Throughout this project you can see all their data discovered and analyzed into graphs, collages, and even a “Selfiexploratory” showing every detail all the way down to the tilt of their head. Using these visual aids to showcase their data and analysis, allows the audience to see a real scope of this project. This project was created to understand cultural differences like age, gender, and locations. The main audience for this project is older menials at this time who didn’t understand the young culture and the selfie phenomenon. This is a digital humanities project because, it uses digital technologies to showcase their data, and showcases human culture.
