The purpose of this page is to center around projects similar to ORBIS. The only project I’ve found with similarities to ORBIS is a project called Roman Open Data. They both accomplish the same goal: to explore trading during the time of the Roman Empire.
Roman Open Data was created by a group called the Roman Economic and Political Network (EPNet) in 2017 as a part of the European Research Council and the University of Barcelona. The project uses the database CEIPAC that helps the user to interface with exploring the Roman Empire Trading System. This allows someone to map what it would have been like to travel in that time, while seeing all the costs that it comes along with the travel. The user is able to alter all the factors of the travel such as the the route, mode of transportation, and the amount of travelers, similar to what ORBIS does. Unlike ORBIS, Roman Open Data shows different temporal coverages throughout each area of the Roman Empire. However, while ORBIS does a fantastic job at showing the routes of traders during this time period, Roman Open Data does not have a “To” and “From” feature to show the exact routes. Either way, ORBIS and Roman Open Data offer a great look into the trading life of the Roman Empire.
