Peer Projects

There are a vast wealth of peer projects to the WCU Comics in the Special Collections Project, but these are three of the best examples.

Comic Book DB – A database intended to collate everything related to comics, manga, etc. Speaks for itself.

The Grand Comics Database – A nonprofit, open to all database that attempted to catalogue all printed comics in the world. Shut down in Nov. 2019 but speaks for itself.

Princeton’s Numismatic Collection – A database of the various items in the Princeton Numismatic Collection. This is an example of a database from another college of items in one of its special collections.

Comic Art Collection at Michigan State University – This is one of the largest university-centered collections of comics in the USA. However, their web design is dated and hard to navigate.

The Virginia Commonwealth University Collection – VCU offers a PHD for Visual Communication, so it stands to reason that their web design stands out compared to MSU’s. Fully catalogued and easy to search, this is the goal.

Our project differs from the two comics databases in that it is a specific collection (the WCU Peter J. Adler Comics Collection), and from the Princeton one in that it is about comics, not various ancient objects such as coins. Out project is going to aim to have a more robust user interface than the MSU collection, aiming to be more like the VCU Collection.
