The short-term result of this project is there will be a collection of raw data that anyone can analyse. With the ease of access the Google Sheets provides, anyone can take the data and produce a meaningful analysis with an accompanying graphic.
There are many long-term outcomes we hope to achieve with the raw data:
- Tournament organizers can use this information to make better informed decisions on banning a character or stage based on usage (character and stage) and win percentage (character only).
- The information can give a resource to help players make better informed tier lists, which list the relative power each characters compared to each other, and match-up charts, which are made to highlight how well certain characters fare against others in a vacuum.
- Help players decide which stages are better or worse for specific characters.
- Catch player outliers who have much better results with a character than others. An example of this is Kentaro “Brood” Asari’s 2nd place at Umebura SP 4 (700+ attendees) with the character Piranha Plant, who was considered one of the worst characters at the time and had no other relevant results before then.
- Show insights on character switching, such as when players choose to switch characters, which character they switch off of, and which character they switch to.
- Cultural analysts can relate the collected data to other phenomena related to Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
