Audience & Peer Projects

The main audience of this project is people involved in the Super Smash Bros Ultimate competitive community. The gathered information would be of interest to people so they can look at trends among character usage, stage usage, character switch frequency, etc. It helps them to get a better understanding of how the metagame (the game within the game) is played. Another primary audience is those interested in the culture of gaming. Those people can look at the data to analyse how people view the game within a cultural context.

PG Stats – PG Stats is the premiere player ranking for Super Smash Bros Ultimate, ranking the top 50 players biannually. The team uses algorithms to numerically rank players against each other, accounting for data like head-to-head set counts between players and final placements at major events.

OrionRank – The second most popular player ranking, behind PG Stats, OrionRank is different from PG Stats in a few ways. First off, their rankings are only released once per year. The second difference is that it ranks the top 100 players in an attempt to highlight more of the talented players that may not break into the top 50, but are still worthy of note. Lastly, OrionRank also tracks character usage, albeit differently from how this project plans to. Their methodology on character data can be found on pages 7-8 of this document.
