Data

What is it?

The data for this project are six different Rose Hall Slave Registers spanning from 1817 to 1832. All of these registers are accessible and downloadable under the documents tab on the project’s website.

The Sources

According to the project, the slave registers at The “Rose Hall Plantation are available at the Jamaica Archives in Spanish Town and the National Archives in Kew, England.” This is where all the data on a slave’s name, age, and family relations come from.

Output

This data was then used to create the flower graphic on the homepage of the project which allows users to click through and read about each slave. Professor Naylor’s research on the Jamaica archives and national archives allowed her to emphasize specific information about the 208 enslaved at The Rose Hall Plantation.

Sharing this data with the public helps the project reach its core goal of spreading awareness and revealing the truth behind Rose Hall. The level of detail regarding the enslaved persons amplifies the project’s effect by reshaping abstract history into personal, human stories, allowing audiences to connect emotionally and understand the true impact of slavery.
