Cities and Memory Tool Track

The Cities and Memory project uses a combination of digital tools to collect, process, and present sound-based cultural data. These tools allow contributors from around the world to upload recordings, remix them creatively, and share them through an interactive digital platform.

Cities and Memory

Remiaging a sound

One major tool used in the project is SoundCloud. This platform is used to host and distribute audio recordings submitted by contributors. In the project, SoundCloud allows users to upload both original field recordings and their remixed versions, making them easily accessible to a global audience. Outside of this project, SoundCloud is widely used by musicians, podcasters, and creators to share audio content and build communities. It connects to Digital Humanities by enabling large-scale sharing of cultural and creative audio artifacts.

The project also uses Google Maps as a way to organize and display data geographically. Each sound recording is tied to a specific location, and the interactive map allows users to explore recordings based on place. In the project, this helps connect sound to physical environments, giving cultural and spatial context to each recording. Outside of this project, Google Maps is used for navigation, data visualization, and geographic analysis. In Digital Humanities, mapping tools like this are essential for visualizing relationships between culture, place, and data.

Overall, the best practices of these tools in the project is strong. Each recording is clearly labeled with its location, description, and creator, making the data easy to understand and explore. The combination of audio platforms, editing software, and mapping tools demonstrates how Digital Humanities projects use technology to preserve, reinterpret, and share human experiences in innovative ways.
