“General Video Game AI: a Multi-Track Framework for Evaluating Agents, Games and Content Generation Algorithms” by Diego Perez-Liebana, Jialin Liu, Ahmed Khalifa, Raluca D. Gaina, Julian Togelius, and Simon M. Lucas was published in 2019. The authors are researchers in computer science, artificial intelligence, computational intelligence, and game development. The publication focuses on General Video Game AI or GVGAI. This is an approach to creating artificial intelligence that, instead of being designed to play one specific game, is designed to play multiple different video games. The approach was created because AI agents designed for only one game were getting too good at that one game. GVGAI was created to test whether or not an AI Agent could be built to work across many different games. This framework was successful as GVGAI was able to create agents that were able to not only play multiple different games, but also play games that it was not specifically designed for. Despite the success, none of the tested agents were able to play every game perfectly. Algorithms designed for 2D platformer games like Mario has trouble switching genres to say, a 3D open world game like Minecraft for example. This show that the goal of creating an AI agent that can play any game is certainly possible, but not yet completed.
This paper shows how computer science uses tools such as algorithms, AI and programming to tackle and research different problems and use cases. It shows the values shared by both Computer Science and Digital Humanities in action as the creation of GVGAI shows teamwork, creativity and innovation. GVGAI could also be studied from a humanities perspective, especially as it develops. An agent that can play any game is certainly a digital artifact and a Digital Humanities expert could study what this technology means for human culture as they could use it to site AI’s rapid advancement. The publication shows that Computer Science and Digital humanities are related as they can approach the same digital object from different perspectives and use different methods to analyze and use it.
