Comprehensive privacy legislation won’t fix everything. Children may still see things that they shouldn’t. New businesses will still have to struggle against the deep pockets of their established tech giant competitors. Governments will still have tools to surveil people directly. But the same is true for most of the proposals we’ve seen that don’t directly address privacy. A privacy-first approach would help alleviate a variety of problems, giving us some breathing room while we explore how to finish the job.
