Flickr

About: Flickr is a world-wide picture site (mainly selfies) and can be accessed from any phone, computer, tablet, or even those new smart refrigerators. A lot like Selfie City and Tumblr, Flickr’s goal is to enable anyone to share beautiful, or not so beautiful, pictures of themselves with the world around them.

Purpose: Flickr wants to help people make their photos available to the people who matter to them and they want to enable new ways of organizing photos and video. To do this, Flickr aims to get photos and video into and out of the system in as many ways as they can: from the web, from mobile devices, from the users’ home computers and from whatever software they are using to manage their content. On top of this, the popular picture sharing site wants to be able to push them out in as many ways as possible: on the Flickr website, in RSS feeds, by email, by posting to outside blogs or ways they haven’t even thought of yet.

Tumblr

About: “We made it really, really simple for people to make a blog and put whatever they want on it. Stories, photos, GIFs, TV shows, links, quips, dumb jokes, smart jokes, Spotify tracks, mp3s, videos, fashion, art, deep stuff. Tumblr is 439 million different blogs, filled with literally whatever” -Tumblr. Tumblr is simple. Over the years, its safe to say that its popularity has grown close to that of Instagram’s; however it hasn’t quite reached that high level of success. Originally owned by Oath Inc. and bought out by Yahoo, Tumblr has ultimately changed the environment of microblogging for all the world around it.

Purpose: Tumblr is simple.  Over the years, its safe to say that its popularity has grown close to that of Instagram’s; however it hasn’t quite reached that high level of success. It was designed for even the least “tech-savvy” of people to create a blog and share pictures with others. The purpose of Tumblr is to have a way to put all of your blogs, pictures, or anything else you want to share in one single location. It’s useful for personal interests, such as putting writing compositions together or photography together but also for educational reasons.
