Evaluation

This page will contain an overall evaluation of the Selfie City Project and assess things like how it appealed to its audience, how it functioned as an independent project, and how it essentially served its purpose. In order to do that we had to determine if what the project said it was offering to users, was actually being offered. The Selfie City Project was created to research selfies in five different countries in order to discover if there were any trends based off of demographics and location. This project uses two different methodologies to reach its goals.

Below is an example of the first method used (Imageplots):

The Imageplot tool was designed to arrange selfies in each country by head tilt and whether or not the person taking the selfie is looking up or down. Using the grid of pictures will allow a user to see trends in gender and age profiles in each country, as well as smile distributions by gender in each country. Mechanical Turk workers were hired to look over thousands of a photos to determine age and gender of each person using human judgement. Obviously, they can not be 100% accurate about the age and gender of a person based off of a picture but were still able to come up with some great statistics. I believe the graphs designed for smile distribution by gender were a bit more accurate but again, not 100% right.

Below is an example of the second method used (Selfiexploratory):

Selfiexploratory is an easy to understand tool that shows users the spread of knowledge gained from all of the photos taken in this project. It shows the trends in: demographics, pose, features, and mood. Again, all of this data can not be completely accurate but it is a very intricate tool that shows a vast amount of great information that can be quite beneficial in someone’s research about picture trends.

This project is successful in mainly focusing digital and social media marketers. The tools available to users are exceptional at demonstrating the trends and demographics of selfie takers. This information can be used to find target segments in people that enjoy photography.
