Space, Place & Location.

Space, Place & Location are key points on what makes this project. Rather than discussing attributes like “Rich vs Poor” etc., it keys it on Space and Location. We decided to leave out place becuase with the locations provides it made more sense for our research to be focused in other aspects.

Space

Spacial is when you compare in this case you have to compare people based on location and the only way to do this is with more than two locations. The location they have selected to use is from Bangkok, Berlin, Moscow, New York & Sao Paulo.

(Bangkok)

When talking about the place they’re actually referring to the closest city/area. Rather than saying “I’m from 42nd street” instead you would say “I’m from New York.” With this, you can see based on the picture some questions arise like “do Sao Paulo women actually tilt their heads more? Do New Yorkers or Berliners look older?”

When Breaking this chart down we can see this is a bar chart. At first glance, it may appear different but we can identify numerous factors, including “Smiles” which was talked about on the Methodology page, and “Age” which will be our example point (Images Below).

NEW YORK, USA
BANGKOK, THAILAND

As seen above there are many attributes and features to compare but, we are going to stick with age. From this data, we used New York & Bangkok as our study, and off the bat, the two age charts looked relatively the same but they had different peek points. With New York having a peek at 24 years old & Bangkok with 20 years old. From these two studies, we can see there were more younger people who posted on Instagram during this test period than in New York.

Location

The location can be found through a ‘Geo-tag’. To locate selfies photos, they randomly selected 120,000 photos (20,000-30,000 photos per city) from a total of 656,000 images we collected on Instagram. Amazon’s Mechanical Turk workers tagged each photo. For these, we asked Mechanical Turk workers the simple question “Does this photo shows a single selfie”?
