Linked Jazz Network Visualization Tool
An interactive display of a web of networks from hundreds of jazz musicians. Each circle gives a brief description of the musician and their connections to other musicians. There are some interactive features that filter out the network based on gender, dynamic, or similar artists.

This tool gives a more user friendly and interactive approach to researching the social networking of many jazz musicians to better understand their history and their influence for future generations.
What first started out as a data collection from Wikipedia sources to hundreds of jazz artists, then turned into a collaborative effort by both the team and university databases such as Hamilton College, University of Michigan, and the Smithsonian. Overtime, these databases were then incorporated into Linked Open Data technology, which allows the data to be connected to different groups. A software known as DBPedia was also used to generate filters of sets of data.
“At the beginning of our project, we created a starter list of names of jazz musicians. This list, comprised of 9300 names, was generated by filtering the DBpedia RDF extracts for Jazz related individuals.”
Does it best reflect the goals and values of digital humanities?
These tools created for the project seems to reflect the goals and values of digital humanities very well, as the tools used represent the data collected and accessed through Linked Open Data.
