Data

The data for this project is the relationships of jazz musicians. How this data is formatted is through URI, which is basically a name tag that allows the visualizer to organize and understand what relationships the jazz musicians had.

“New modes of connecting cultural data have the potential to open up new and unprecedented avenues of research and community engagement.”

The project starts with 50 transcriptions of oral history interviews, which are cross-referenced with the results of filtering the DBpedia RDF extracts for Jazz related individuals, with DBPedia being an open data version of Wikipedia.

The end result is a comprehensive visual representation of jazz musicians’ relationships, with shared data.

Does it best reflect the goals and values of digital humanities?

This aspect of the project does seem to reflect the goals and values of digital humanities well, since it attempts to analyze, interpret, publish and share cultural data.
