The relationship between digital humanities and social media is one that is closely intertwined. In the day and age of the internet one of the best places to see and understand culture is through social media. While a quick scroll might not always give the full picture, the data that can be gleaned from social media is and can continue to be important to study of how humans interact and behave. Not only can you learn data from what people post but you can also learn information from back end data like geo-location, hashtags, and engagement; all of which can be used in the field of digital humanities. Not only do the two disciplines share some of the same tools but they also share the goal of cultural analysis as studies within both fields often look at what data from social media says about people and culture at large. Finally, both digital humanities and social media as disciplines share similar values of diversity. Social media is often used to connect with others and share information about cultures that one might not normally have access to while digital humanities uses it’s research to share and earn more about different people and their cultures.
