Greene Street Project

This project, created by William Easterly, Laura Freschi, Steven Pennings, and the Development Research Institute at New York University, examines the social and economic changes on Greene Street in New York City through the years.

The Greene Project aims to present the ups and downs of the evolution of the singular street. With the use of resources such as graphing, captioned slide shows, and soundtracks, as well as maps and authentic photos, the Greene Street Project captures the colonial people of New Amsterdam (modern-day NYC), occupation/labor, Great Depression assets of the 1930s, today’s nature, and everything in between.

The changes from Yellow Fever-ridden streets in the early 1800s, to the modern luxury crowds of today, Greene Street’s reputation receives much more respect in today’s culture.
