Overview

I’m proposing a digital mapping project which lays out the funding details for public schools in Philadelphia.

The map would be interactive and color-graded based on level of funding, and it would give information on where that money comes from, the percent increase or decrease from previous years, the proportion of students graduating, and the proportion of students attending some form of higher education.

This project addresses a core social justice issue in Philadelphia, the unequal distribution of resources across public schools. Mapping funding patterns unveils information which is often hidden in spreadsheets and budget documents.

The truth is, students in different neighborhoods do not receive the same educational opportunities, despite public schools being a universal public good.
