We plan to create a heat map and a database to show network intrusions and malicious attacks that are directed at West Chester. Our database, powered by MySQL, will scrape the University's firewall to find any unwarranted traffic coming into the school's main network, RamNet. We will store the information from each instance of unwarranted traffic, including when the attack happened, what exactly the attack was, and where it happened at (which server on the network). The heat map will be created from Mapline, and will use all of the information collected from the database to create the visualization for students and faculty to use. There will be pins placed on each server to show where each attack happened and a red circle underneath each pin that will increase in darkness the more attacks that are directed at that specific location. Some similar projects that we have looked at to give us some direction are threat maps on Checkpoint and Radware. These specific projects have mutual goals with us, just on a global scale, where we are basing this just on West Chester University.
There has been an increase in malicious attacks directed at West Chester over the past few years, specifically phishing attempts. We aim to make this information more publicly available to the students and faculty here at West Chester to better inform our community. This will allow students and staff to get real time information about new attacks and what to look out for while they are browsing. This project will build upon West Chester's Cybersecurity Awareness program and will give students and faculty more resources and tools to better inform themselves on campus safety.
