Technologies / Tools Used in the Project

Summary

The main technology used is Voyant Tools, an online text-analysis platform. Voyant is the primary tool that allows this project to turn online student conversations into visual patterns, word clouds, frequency charts, and topic trends. It is widely used in Digital Humanities because it makes computational text analysis accessible, visual, and easy to interpret

How Voyant Tools Works in This Project

After collecting and summarizing text from Reddit, Discord, Instagram comments, and Yik Yak, the combined text is uploaded into Voyant. The tool automatically generates:

  • Word Clouds – showing the most common words students use
  • Frequency Tables – ranking keywords by how often they appear
  • Trends Graphs – showing how certain topics appear across the dataset
  • Context tools – showing how specific words appear in sentences
  • Topic Patterns – grouping related ideas together

Why Voyant Tools is Important

Voyant is essential because it transforms unstructured online conversations into clear, readable patterns. Without Voyant, it would be difficult to see which issues are most common or how different platforms compare. The tool supports DH goals by:

  • making text analysis accessible
  • providing transparent, visual results
  • helping interpret digital culture and communication
  • supporting ethical, non-invasive analysis of public text

Why Voyant Fits Digital Huminites

Voyant aligns with DH values because it:

  • uses computation to study human communication
  • turns digital text into cultural insight
  • supports open, accessible scholarship
  • helps researchers interpret meaning, not just count words

It is the ideal tool for a project focused on analyzing online student conversations.
