Methods Used in Project
The Borderlands Archives Cartography project collects newspaper data then organizes it and shares it to the public through there website. First they gather data from places like libraries, archives, and other online sources. Next they find digitize the newspapers while recording details. They then put the data on a map using tools like OpenStreetMapping to show where all the newspapers were published. Finally, they share the results on their website to anyone who wants to look at the maps and newspaper archives.
A key step in the project is the collecting and organizing of data. More specifically in this step they identify newspapers from history and digitizes them if they are not already. They record data like the newspaper’s name, place of publication, date, and even language its in. This makes it easier to search and link them to map locations. This connects to OpenStreetMap because the information gathered in this step is used to make the maps and without it the information would not be entirely accurate. The data collected is then added into the maps. Overall this step is important as it connects the data directly and it makes sure each item is represented correctly and easy to trace.
The project has clear aim, describes the data, uses mapping tools, and acknowledges things it can fix. But it needs more detail on Reliability and data limitations, and they need to do a better job of relaying there methods.
This photo is an example of dat collected and being put on the map.
