Custom Google Maps

Custom Google Maps is a platform that allows users to add points, save places, and draw on to their liking. The maps can also be personalized with different icons, colors, and styles. Once completed, the custom map can remain private, or could be made public so that others can save them.
Fowkes uses Custom Google Maps to present his data. Each data point is marked on the map allowing viewers to easily see where each sound was captured. Every point on the map can be interacted with, and viewers are provided with an image of the area, an untouched field recording from the area, and a remixed version of the sound.
Band Camp

Bandcamp is an audio distribution platform where users can download stored files that are added by artists, producers, and people who want to share audio.
Bandcamp is used in the project to archive Fowkes’ sound collection and allow for viewers to listen to and download the sounds featured on the site. The sounds are organized based on the area they were captured, the year they were captured, and by the type of sound, making it simple to browse for the perfect sound.
The use of technology in Cities and Memory does meet the best practices of digital humanities projects, as all data is compiled within these two tools, and the data is accessible to all.
