Cities and Memory compiles sounds from thousands of contributors onto one website. Stuart Fowkes captures some of the audio recordings and creates some of the reimagined audio clips, but lots of the work is done through collaboration.
Collaborators must adhere to the following method for their work to be included in the project:
- The field recording must be between 1-20 minutes and submitted as a WAV file.
- The exact location of where the recording was captured must be included.
- The recording needs to be titled, and a brief description of the sound should be included as well.
- The recording may optionally include both a photo and a remix of the sound. If not provided, the remix will be created by either Fowkes or another contributing sound artist.
This method of contribution meets the best practices of digital humanities projects, as all collaborators are credited for their contributions, and their work is seamlessly included with the rest of the data.
