The methods that they used in the selfiecity project consisted of mainly gathering information in different cities through surveys. They then used these surveys and information the gathered to go into deeper depth while analyzing. They use lots of statistical methods throughout this project too, when it comes to showing their data findings. They go into detail about the percentages of each one of their chosen statistics.
One of the main methods they use in this project is the help of Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk). Mturk is a website that uses artificial intelligence, run by a human task force to gather information for businesses to be able to hire new task members to complete jobs on demand. They allow people to choose what jobs and tasks they would like to work on then have AI also help. The AI is there to help businesses complete smaller, simpler tasks, while real humans are there for more demanding tasks. In some cases, AI and humans will work together on projects. although AI is a large part of this system, humans are the main driving force of the website.

For selfiecity specifically, the members that worked on this project were tasked with investigating patterns within 3840 photos from six different global cities (640 photos per city). they were then tasked with looking at this selection of pictures and seeing if there were any type of selfie trends. (this includes women/male selfies, the degrees of their heads, and other factors.) The creators of this project then used this data to create visualizations for the page. (More on this information can be found in some of the publications attached to selfiecity’s website)
The creators of SelfieCity went in and took their findings by using MTurk to create high-tech graphs to represent their data and to show the relation between cities. One method they do to represent this is taking all the pictures they looked at and putting them into a chart, which is interactive so that users can look a the data findings themselves.
