Data

The data collected in the selfiecity project is a unique dataset of selfie photos on Instagram, to analyze, through automatic image analysis and human judgement, thousands of images from different cities across the globe. The project collected about 656,000 photos and the final set to make visualizations comparable contains about 640 selfie photos from every city. The cities include Bangkok, Thailand; Berlin, Germany; Moscow, Russia; New York City, United States; and Sao Paolo, Brazil. The data is interesting since the data collected is similar to a time capsule and photos were only taken between established dates. These dates were between December 4 and 12 of 2013.

The final product of the data collected reveals findings such as, people take fewer selfies than originally assumed, significantly more women take selfies than men, and women take more posed photos than men in San Paolo. These findings and output data can be found on the webpage in the form of a few graphs organized by city. In addition they were able to form many visualizations with their data all of their graphs and interactive tools really allow you to experiment and interact with what these researchers found interesting about these photos like how old does the person look or do they wear glasses? This can all be done through the selfiexploratory and right on their page!
