To date, this project has brought over 20,000 photographs into the public domain which would otherwise not be discoverable and provides archive standard long-term preservation for them, and for a further 30,000 images that have been digitized and preserved, but not further published online.

The platform provides a unique type of way to manage the images and add and enrich metadata prior to their publication that is later on posted on the website. The platform has a mirror site in China, hosted at Shanghai Jiaotong University.

Since 2007 the project has achieved many milestones, one of them including being recognized by the British Academy as an Academy Research Project.

The platform was developed by the Research IT team at the University of Bristol, using the open-source content management framework Drupal and the MySQL relational database. The platform provides a mechanism to manage the images and add and enrich the data prior to their publication on the website.
