One scholarly article that is relevant to the Historical Photographs of China project is “China through a colonial lens”. This article was written by Robert Bickers, who is the director of the project, for History Today.

The article discusses the presence of British people in China prior to the outbreak of World War II, with the author emphasizing his use of family photograph albums to gain an understanding of the British-Chinese relationship. Particular emphasis is given to the album of post office official Oliver Hulme and the impact of Qing dynasty administrative and civil service reforms on Hulme’s Chinese experience. Depictions of the Chinese republican revolt against the Qing government are described as well. The author sees Britain’s early 20th-century connection with China as characteristic of globalization.
