Discord

Launched in May of 2015 by founders Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy, Discord is a “Voice, Video, and text communication platform used by over two hundred million people to hang out and play games with their friends.” This service provides all the tools needed to make multiple channels filled with chats for all different departments and classes. The creative aspects, including server icons, roles identifiable by color, and other customizations, can identify each student by their major, as well as school spirit. For example, there could be a “Chemistry” role, labeled with the color purple, giving all the chemistry majors a purple role of identification. For a decade now, Discord has been a popular communication app for gamers alike, but has the capability to serve students in their academic journey.

Customization

As mentioned above, the customization aspect of Discord not only makes it easier to identify fellow students but also makes communicating more fun and lighthearted. Listed by Google AI, customizations include “Avatars, banners, bios, decorations, pronouns, themes, colors, roles, emojis, banners, and more.” The possibilities of school spirit and creativity are limitless, and can appeal to the students to join in on the communal servers.
