Above is a picture of a squatter’s village, or “Packing Box City,” these sprouted up in the 1930’s at Houston Street, like in many cities after the Great Depression.
The social justice impact from this project helped create a more friendly environment and affordable for all of manhattan just by studying one block in the So-Ho Neighborhood. The authors used all of their collected data from census records and questionnaires as as well as real estate from this neighborhood. They were able to state what was happening during what year, what building was used for what and how it should be used in the future. As well as cultural preservation of the buildings which helps with keeping the residents homes because if the historic building that housed hundreds of people was destroyed they would be displaced and have nowhere to go.
