Data In This Project

The Data: The project utilizes raw geographical immigration data—specifically the precise latitude and longitude coordinates of ICE detention centers, ports of entry, and CBP jurisdictions.

  • Input Sources & Format: Data was extracted as raw CSV spreadsheets from FOIA requests and government registries. A comprehensive list of their data sources is linked directly in their bibliography: https://xpmethod.columbia.edu/torn-apart/credits.html
  • Output: The raw input is mathematically converted into a spatial visualization (shown below) and outputted as downloadable data sets.
  • Best Practices Assessment (Documentation): The project team documented their data with maximum efficiency. By providing a centralized bibliography linking directly to the original government datasets and GitHub repositories, they maintain strict adherence to DH best practices for data provenance and reproducibility.
