Social Justice Impact

  • Torn Apart / Separados directly shapes the culture of immigration awareness by forcing visibility onto a hidden system. The primary cultural issue it addresses is the systemic anonymity of immigration enforcement. ICE facilities are often embedded in plain sight within local communities. By mapping these locations, the project alters the cultural narrative from an abstract border issue to a localized reality, revealing how deeply embedded these facilities are in everyday American geography.
  • Assessment: The project definitively meets DH best practices for social justice by leveraging digital tools to give voice to marginalized communities and providing actionable data to activists fighting systemic inequalities.
