Introduction

Phototrails is a digital humanities project created by Nadav Hochman, Lev Manovich, and Jay Chow that analyzes 2.3 million Instagram photos from 13 global cities. Using data like color, time, and location, the project visualizes cultural and social patterns in user-generated images. Developed between 2012 and 2013, it introduces new methods for exploring big visual data. Phototrails is important to both digital humanities and Cultural Analytics because it combines data science and visual storytelling, offering innovative ways to study culture through images at both global and local scales.
