Overview:
The goal of the methods is to create a triple connection from jazz artist to jazz artist using crowdsourcing to make the connection.
- Crowdsourcing – the process of obtaining information and input from a large group of people for a project
- Tim Berner Lee’s (2006) 5 Star LOD Principles:
- Data created must be publicly available
- Data available in machine-readable structure
- Rely on non-proprietary format to publish
- All URIs and URLs are resolved to existing webpages
Phase 1:
- Data Set Connections – used recorded transcripts as data sources
- Names mentioned in the transcript created first layer of connections
- Linkages expressed by foaf:knows
- Allows the capability of more complex questions like “How many people did this artist know?”
- Visualization of Social Network – adding this information into Gephi
- Nodes created, which change in size depending on how many times an artist is mentioned

Phase 2:
- Vocabulary Extension – allowed for the enhancement of the representation between Jazz artists beyond foaf:knows
- Identification of methods for more granular connections created
- Generation of relationships describing collaboration
- Design of Crowdsourcing tool:
- Will allow for more complex relationships to be created
- Leads to further analysis of connections

Assessment of Best Practices:
The methods of the Linked Jazz project aline well with the idea of best practices in Digital Humanities. All of the data collected and analyzed is publicly available to view and use as the user chooses. Also part of their main principles says that they must have site documentation, which they do.
