Goals

Goal #1

The goal of Isaac Ariail Reed’s publication on the Salem Witch Trials was to model the specific cultural process of how the conditions for a a moral panic are turned into a real moral panic. In other words, the author was interested in the process of this transformation and how it could lead to a widespread community breakdown

He tries to explain this through using graphs, collecting and analyzing data on accusations (like sermons given to Salem residents), and detailing how different theories of culture relate to the trials.

Understanding how people behave and how culture is formed is absolutely compatible with the goals of the Digital Humanities, which is focused on digitally studying how people behave.

Goal #2

The ultimate goal of Benjamin Ray with the Salem Witch Trials archive project was to enable as many voices of the people involved to be heard.

The project achieves this goal through documenting different aspects of the Salem Witch Trials like depositions, books and letters, maps, and biographies on individuals in a digital archive. This archive makes accessing and understanding these incredibly old materials so much easier for the general public, as well as any scholars who want to do their own work on the incident

Documenting the behavior of people and the existence of people themselves is compatible with the goals of the Digital Humanities
