Goals

  1. Goal: Persuading the Professors and Students on Urban Renewal’s Impact
  2. Objective of Project: Provide historical insights and make the data accessible to the public, particularly regarding the social and geographic impact of urban renewal policies in U.S. cities.
  3. DH Connection: This goal aligns with the DH value of Public Accessibility and Engagement, fostering a broader understanding of urban history by making complex data visually accessible.
  4. The project highlights similar displacement patterns in cities like San Francisco and New York, where urban renewal policies led to large-scale removals, often targeting predominantly African American neighborhoods. This digital project provides interactive visualizations of the scope and demographics affected by these policies, using data from federal sources to showcase the legacy of urban renewal on community structures and racial dynamics.
The audience and users consist of college-educated specialists as well as researchers and students of history and urban planning.
