Tools

The Surfacing project is sponsored by SubOptic who partners with TeleGeography to utilize their cartography technology. TeleGeography uses a variety of tools to create a comprehensive submarine cable network map including Adobe Illustrator’s Javascript API, MAPublisher, Google Fusion Tables, and Google Map API.

TeleGeography’s primary tool for digital cable network cartography is MAPublisher. This tool is a GIS plugin from Avenza allowing TeleGeography “to geo-reference every piece of artwork, fusing the team’s creative ideas to hard data.”(TeleGeography) Nodes on the interactive map are geocoded on TeleGeography’s Mercator base map using MAPublisher. “This allows us to export two data sets: KML for the submarine cable lines, and Points for the landing points.”(TeleGeography) Simply put, MAPublisher allows TeleGeography to place nodes on a map and connect them visually using KML.
