Goals
The Waterfront Community Commons has several interconnected goals. First, it aims to create a significant number of affordable and mixed-income housing units so that existing residents can remain in the community and new households of varying incomes can move in without displacing long-term neighbors. Second, it seeks to support local economic development by providing space for small retailers, restaurants, and services that reflect the culture and needs of Southeast DC residents. Third, the project is designed to expand access to green space, gardens, and waterfront recreation, improving both physical and mental health outcomes. Finally, it strives to build a sense of identity and pride by creating a safe, welcoming public realm that reflects community input and supports gathering, events, and everyday use.
Audience
The primary audience and beneficiaries for this project are the residents of the Southeast quadrant, especially renters and households facing housing cost burdens, youth and families in need of safe outdoor spaces, and local entrepreneurs seeking visible, affordable commercial space. At the same time, the Commons would be open to residents from across the city and visitors, reinforcing the idea that the Anacostia waterfront is a shared public resource rather than a barrier or back door.
