Technologies/Tools

Photogrammar blends digital tools with easy-to-use design to help people explore and engage with historical photos. This project automatically tags and sorts images, making it easier for users to find what they want.

One specific tool in Photogrammar includes a new interactive feature that allows users to explore the photo order of up to almost 40,000 images by harnessing the metadata created by the Library of Congress.

Photogrammar states, “…the Library of Congress inadvertently provided
essential information in the metadata that indicated the sequence of photographs within a given five-shot strip!
Using the statistical program R and the code below, we were able to put the strips back together.”

What is R? “R is a programming language for statistical computing and data visualization. It has been adopted in the fields of data mining, bioinformatics, and data analysis.[9]”
