Introduction and Overview

Photogrammar is a digital project which aims to provide access to as many as 170,000 photographs dating back to the 1930s and 1940s, all taken by the Farm Security Administration (FSA).

This project was developed by University of Richmond with hopes of providing digital accessibility, preservation, and historical collections. Lauren Tilton is the director of the project. Taylor Arnold leads the data curation and analysis.

By utilizing interactive mapping and search tools, the project allows users to explore the social, economic, and cultural landscapes of the time through the lens of these historical images. Photogrammar also fosters a deeper understanding of American history by contextualizing the images within their geographical and temporal settings.

This project began in 2010 and has since been updated to have three different versions. The most recent version was published in 2021 and is ongoing.
