4. Data

ACLED collects data on political violence and protest data worldwide. ACLED accesses local media sources from each region and country it collects data for. TV news reports, journals and new media like youtube and tiktok are all accessed in order to collect data and inform a wholistic understanding of the actors at play. ACLED has both a Global Data Collection team and the Quality Assurance team that ensures that all pieces of information collected and displayed by the website are Accurate and up to date. Data for each conflict is documented through the same method accessible through open source spreadsheets downloadable off the ACLED website. Exact dates, location actor, type of conflict, and fatalities are all documented. All methodologies used in the collection data are displayed on the website and how actors are quantified and recorded are described. While the collection and displaying of the acknowledged conflicts is comprehensive, unarmed conflicts are not included in the ACLED and do not appear as statistics. One sided conflicts, such as military casualties or police disruptions are handled the same as geopolitical conflicts and appear the same way in their databases. This data is also catalogued and displayed in websites analysis tool where the information can be broken down and visually displayed in many different formats. The Public display and accessibility of the data of this project connects to the DHM value of collaboration with the project being the efforts of many writers and analysts coming together to document large amounts of information.
