The three main Digital Humanities values that Amara has are:

Connectedness: Amara aims to connect people by making videos more accessible to all through subtitling. The website specifically says that “Amara Enterprise delivers powerful solutions for your video accessibility and localization needs. Key platform features include private and secure workspaces, flexible workflows for creating quality subtitles, plus a powerful API for connecting seamlessly to your own platform. Amara helps companies around the world streamline their subtitling processes.” From this, people are able to work together to create subtitled videos, and can connect these videos to their websites. Amara connects people by making videos easy to view for everyone.

Openness: Anyone can use Amara’s subtitling service. All current projects are public, and open for anyone to access. Also, Amara has an open volunteer program. Anyone can volunteer to do some subtitling work whenever and wherever they want. For example, someone who only speaks English can subtitle English videos to help people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Someone who knows multiple languages can help to make a video accessible in their languages. Also, Amara can be used on any web browser. On the website, Amara lists 18 of their popular volunteer groups that anyone can join. One of the pages on Amara’s website states that “Content that can enrich lives, but is not currently available to those who cannot hear or understand the language of the video. We believe a participatory and inclusive world leads to a more understanding and caring society.” See more on this at https://amara.org/en/volunteer/

Collaboration: Amara’s mission statement is “Working to build a more open, collaborative world.” Amara’s website specifically states that the software is “…fun and easy to learn, and encourages collaboration. Whether you’re an independent video creator, someone helping a friend access a video, or a grandchild translating a family clip for Grandma – the Amara Editor is the simplest way to make video accessible.” Because it’s easy for people to work together on a video, and share that video, Amara encourages collaboration.
